Dramatic transformation in Barnard Castle!
Earlier this year we met a lovely couple, Kate and Richard, at the Living North Interiors show in York. Kate and Richard own Mill Granary Cottages in Barnard Castle, a selection of beautiful, luxury self catering holiday cottages on the Durham/Yorkshire border. They were looking for something different for the kitchen in their newest cottage, Cheeseborough House, and we had a fantastic glazed dresser that was perfect. The cottage was undergoing renovation at the time and was almost complete when we personally delivered the dresser. It was the first piece of furniture to arrive at the house! While we were there, Richard asked us to look at some pieces of bedroom furniture that were tired, mismatched and in need of tlc with a view to painting them to revitalize them. After consulting with Richard about his ideas, colour scheme and paint finishes, we agreed to take on the commission and we returned to our workshop with the van fuller than when we left that morning! With a very short deadline we set about repairing and preparing the furniture ready to start painting. This is what we started with…
Richard wanted a vivid, heavily distressed look to the furniture with a double colour scheme so after cleaning and preparing the pieces, we decided on the exact shades and started with two coats of the base colour in green.
We then moved on to the main colour, a dramatic blood red, and as each piece was painted the hue gave our workshop a very distinctive glow! Three coats of red later, we created the distressed effect and also incorporated a crackle effect to enhance the distressed look that Richard was looking for.
Once the paintwork was completed and fully dried, we applied a carnauba wax finish and buffed the surfaces to create a soft sheen. The finish is incredibly durable but will allow natural distressing and aging, perfect for a holiday cottage. We added new handles and knobs in black which further enhanced the dramatic look. And the end result? Complete transformation…..
