Hand painted furniture

We started out as a design-led, exclusive boutique selling fabulous hand painted furniture, one-off pieces of original furniture which we re-design, re-construct and re-finish in our own workshops. Very soon, however, we found that a large proportion of our time was taken up with commissioned work for homeowners, holiday lets and a number of businesses including cafés, restaurants and hotels.

The commissions quickly led to us being asked for style advice and project management. The interior design projects are something that we love to get involved with as the creation of the whole room is just an extension of the furniture. You can see one of our projects here http://steeleandcox.co.uk/restyling-ensuite-bathroom/

In every Steele & Cox piece of hand painted furniture we are careful to retain the original individuality of the piece, enhancing natural beauty by revealing the most amazing grain in quality woods which are rarely seen in the mass produced and imported furniture we are awash with today. Through thoughtful design we inject a contemporary edge that allows each piece to sit within both traditional and modern interiors. And all for an affordable price tag. We create an eclectic variety of furniture and furnishings which are sourced from all sorts of places like antique fairs and auctions, house clearances and even the internet. The thing we look for is the quality of the materials and build along with how unusual it is in its original state. Ultimately we need to get excited at the potential and that’s the vision that transforms our pieces into the stunning, the unusual and the timeless statement pieces that people love. Some items are beautiful just the way they are so we refurbish them where required and sell them in our antique and retro category. Well not everything needs a face lift!

The foundations

Our fabulous hand painted furniture company is the result of a collaboration between friends Julie Cox and Nicky Steele. We not only share a mutual passion for creativity and interiors but we also share many fundamental beliefs. Excited by what we could achieve by breathing new life into outdated and unwanted furniture, we took the plunge and laid the foundations for a dream partnership.

The founders

Nicky is an artist and after completing art college forged a career as a packaging designer and branding expert working with blue chip companies and setting up a successful brand consultancy. Her artistic skills and natural eye for colour allows her to intuitively see the hidden treasure in each piece. She is a perfectionist and uses her artistic flair to hand embellish our creations giving them a uniqueness that is difficult to find in this world of mass production. Nicky has vision and foresight, her ideas are constantly evolving with a creative fluidity encompassing romanticism and quirkiness, colours and textures. She has a flamboyant passion for life, a warmth and an appreciation of everything that life has to offer bringing an invaluable style and unrivalled individuality to our fabulous hand painted furniture and all of our creations.

Julie is the organiser and is skilled in research and diligently pursues every avenue in the quest for information and knowledge. Like Nicky, Julie is a perfectionist. She has a hands-on approach to projects and undertakes the practical aspects with ease using the experience and knowledge gained whilst undertaking many house renovation projects. She is forward thinking with the ability to visualise the ‘end result’ through an appreciation of beauty and style and a love of craftsmanship, artistry and interior design. We see the simplistic beauty in nature and love nothing more than watching the sun set over the lake with the swallows and dragonflies for company, glass of red wine in hand contemplating the next Steele & Cox project……

Why we started

Having a passion for interiors and furniture we were frustrated by the lack of choice available on the high street. So much furniture lacked imagination, uniqueness and solidity and the materials they are made from are usually of low quality.

We saw a gap in the market to appeal to those looking for something smart and different for their home, somewhere between Oak Furniture Land and Mayfair, where antiques meet imagination and a lot of hard work to transform the undesirable into the coveted. And so we started to create our designer one-off pieces with a high street price tag – perfect!

Our point of difference

fabulous hand painted furnitureOur major point of difference is the uniqueness of our products because every piece is a one-off. We’re involved in every aspect of the design, build and finishing process monitoring every stage and constantly assessing every detail. Before we start each new project we ask ourselves How will it be used? How will it look? How will it be cleaned? How can we make it better? How will it look in a few years?. We don’t compromise on the furniture we produce, we see each piece as a work of art. Our customers like the fact that if they commissioned the same piece, newly built to the same standards from the same materials today they would have to pay significantly more. The professional standard of our paint techniques and finishes are earning us a reputation as one of the best furniture painting companies in the market.

Taking commissions to update existing furniture as well as sourcing furniture to order allows us to give an even more personal service. Mixing our own paint colours allows us to match to wallpaper and soft furnishings. We also offer style advice whether it be simply choosing colours or how to achieve a particular theme.

The jewels in our crown

fabulous hand painted furnitureThe invasion from the continent of the vanity basin with storage cabinet beneath continues. Providing cavernous amounts of storage, the rise of the vanity basin means the floor standing pedestal under a sink will soon be considered retro.

We identified that there is a lack of unique traditional style bespoke vanity units as an alternative to the ultra modern units for people who want to either stay true to the era of their home or want to create a real wow factor in an older property (actually they look fantastic in new properties too). Our plans are to continue growing in this area and continue to design bathrooms for our vanity unit buyers.
